My Film of the Year by Lewis Swift

2011 has been a weird year for cinema. Lars Von Trier admitted to being a Nazi, A werewolf fell in love with a baby in a 12A and one of the best films of the year was a documentary (Senna), WTF right? All this has meant that choosing one film to crown as my annual favourite has been even harder than usual. Then there’s the films I haven’t even seen yet; Take Shelter, Money ball and The Artist could all as yet take the crown but for now they’ll have to wait.

Submarine - Welsh New Wave

To make the task arbitrarily easier I have also discounted those movies decorated by the Academy earlier on in the year. Using my dog eared collection of ticket stubs I whittled the list down to fifteen movies then to ten, then to three, then finally to one.  The ticket that remained read simply ‘Submarine’.

Films Spoiled by Simpson References

Beyond its genius writing, clever jokes and unique characters, The Simpsons has another trait that makes it stand out among other sitcoms – it’s pop culture references. I grew up on The Simpsons, which also means when I watched the show as a child, I missed every third or fourth clever joke. It was only in later life that I’d pick up on what the writers were referring to.

bart and tits

This posed a bit of a problem. For while the cult references are fun for those that get them the downside is there are several classic films that have been slightly, if not entirely spoiled for me by Simpsons episodes.
Damn you Groening!

Here’s a few. Obviously, Beware Spoliers!

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
As soon as I was introduced to Chief Bromden in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest I thought he seemed vaguely familiar. Then when Jack Nicholson’s character tried to lift the water fountain my suspicions were confirmed. I had seen the Chief in ‘The Old Man and the ‘C’ Student’ where Bart takes over the retirement home. In the parody scene Chief Bromden throws a water cooler through the window to gain access both in and out of a room. Once I made the connection I knew that the Chief would ultimately use the water cooler to escape from the hospital. ENDING RUINED!

The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader

A few years ago, after the moderately successful Prince Caspian, the House of Mouse decided that C.S. Lewis’ Narnia series was not profitable enough. Two years later, however, and Aslan and co are back courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox. Whilst there is a certain nobility in Fox’s faithful continuation of the story (almost all the cast remains unchanged) there is nothing to say that this latest instalment will break the mould by besting its predecessors box office performance.

Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third of C.S. Lewis’ biblically infused books sees the younger fifty percent of the Pevensie kids once again transported to Narnia, this time through, what is to all intense and purposes, a well tech magic eye picture. Along with their less pioneering cousin Eustace played by Son of Rambow’s Will Poulter, Lucy and Edmund are reunited with the now King Caspian who has set sail on the titular vessel in search of seven of his father’s most trusted advisers.

The Expendables

For all the talk of the most “awesome action cast ever assembled”, The Expendables is in truth just the Stallone and Statham show. The closing quotation marks in the poster below should really be traded for an asterix containing the key “may Contain traces of Willis and Schwazenegger”. But off-cutting the disappointment of feeling slightly jipped once again by marketing bodies, The Expendables makes up for it in almost every other department. A throwback to old school action? Sir, yes sir. Men flying through the air riding on the back of big explosions? Affirmative. A man on fire being punched in the face in what can only be a homage to the thwarted Glasgow Airport Attacks? Aye and thrice aye.

Shrek Forever After Review

Almost ten years ago now, a green ogre called Shrek first appeared on our screens, turning traditional fairy tales on their head with their modern, tongue in cheek reinvention of the genre that allowed both kids and adults to enjoy them.  The result was a funny and inventive smash. Shrek 2, the follow up, was arguably even better, but then the franchise ground to a shuddering halt in the mind achingly awful disaster that was Shrek the Third. So where now for the 4th (and presumably final) instalment?

shrek

The answer is to return the start, Back to the Future style. Or It’s A Wonderful Life, if you were born before 1981 or watch films at Christmas. And the result is pretty good – if not exactly a return to form, it’s a damn sight better than Shrek The Third and is genuinely enjoyable to watch.

[REC] 2 – Review

I used to be the type of person who just didn’t do horror films. I was squeamish and petrified with fear at the thought of watching them. I glimpsed a bit of the original Nightmare on Elm Street when I was young and couldn’t sleep without a crucifix near the bed for quite some time. Then I did something both brave and foolish, I watched the 1974 Texas Chain Saw Massacre, by myself at night, in my mid teens. It freaked me out so much I had to watch Austin Powers afterwards for some comic relief, but, since then, my horror film capability has changed.

rec2

Now, I have watched many a horror film and thought “That was a bit cheesy”, “That is what they’re afraid of?” and (in a sarcastic tone) “Wow. Didn’t see that coming!” Obviously there are a few exceptions to this rule, but I find that most of these exceptions tend to be filmic contributions from countries where English is not the first (or only) language. This leads me nicely to [REC] 2.

The Wednesday Watch – Crash! Bang! Wallow?

As the most splenderific film fans in the world you’ll all be aware that the Cannes film festival is currently in full swing celebrating film in all shapes and sizes. Beyond the Tim Burtons, massive promos for Gullivers Travels and the general feeling that 2010 is shaping up to be a pretty lacklustre year are a host of awesome little movies.

crash!

None more awesome and little than Crash! Bang! Wallow?

Furry Vengeance

Back to the Future Parts II and III, The Lion King, Batteries Not IncludedWho Framed Roger Rabbit?, Aladdin, Jurassic Park, The Muppet’s Christmas Carol.

This is a list of just a few of the cracking movies I have distinct (happy) memories of watching at the pictures all before I turned twelve. The quality and longevity of the aforementioned ‘kids’ movies does however pose an interesting question.

Doesn't it just look shit?

So why in God’s name did Roger Kumble, director of cinematic shite such as Just Friends and College Road Trip, think it was OK to poison the minds of our youth with such creatively void nonsense? What we have in Furry Vengeance is a film so poorly put together that even the most inbred, educationally sub-normal, six fingered, snaggle toothed, eight year old will deem the film beneath them. And they’d be right.

The Tuesday Preview – Robin Hood

In cinemas across the country on May 14th, Ridley Scott’s imagining of Robin Hood promises action and adventure as the title character is reincarnated, Doctor Who-like, for another outing on celluloid.

But what makes this version of the classic story different to the others before it, most recently the much loved or loathed, (depending on your perspective), and undoubted cheese-fest that was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

robin

And what of Ridley Scott’s direction? Will this latest historical/martial epic mark a return to the highs of Gladiator, or another muddled and disjointed failure like Kingdom of Heaven.

Kick Ass – (Review Take Two)

He looks like the long lost, curly haired, American brother of Daniel Radcliffe and Elijah Wood combined. He has the “Geek Chic” factor and comic book nerdiness that both Peter Parker and (the lesser known) Chuck AKA Charles Carmichael possess. No one has heard of him…until he dons the green scuba diving suit and becomes a superhero, and as the tagline says he can’t fly, but he could kick your ass.

kick ass

In case you haven’t guessed I’m talking about the super hero movie Kick Ass, but even though I have put this film under this category don’t think that this is a run of the mill, nobody-geek-to-tough-good-guy film, there’s so much more to it than that! SO much more!
