Shrek Forever After Review

Almost ten years ago now, a green ogre called Shrek first appeared on our screens, turning traditional fairy tales on their head with their modern, tongue in cheek reinvention of the genre that allowed both kids and adults to enjoy them.  The result was a funny and inventive smash. Shrek 2, the follow up, was arguably even better, but then the franchise ground to a shuddering halt in the mind achingly awful disaster that was Shrek the Third. So where now for the 4th (and presumably final) instalment?

The answer is to return the start, Back to the Future style. Or It’s A Wonderful Life, if you were born before 1981 or watch films at Christmas. And the result is pretty good – if not exactly a return to form, it’s a damn sight better than Shrek The Third and is genuinely enjoyable to watch.

Mutual Speculation

Way back on the 9th if June it was widely reported that Michael Fassbender would be taking over the role of Erik Lensherr aka Magneto in the Michael Vaughn directed franchise prequel X-men: First Class. Much to my disappointment, only a few days later I read an article claiming that Fassbender had denied rumours linking him with Magneto and also a similar role in the forthcoming Spider-man reboot.

Chris Nolan hates you!

Then, yesterday I breathed a sigh of relief when Entertainment Weekly reported that Fassbender was all but guaranteed to follow/precede Ian McKellan into the X-men universe. As a fan of the X movies and of Fassbender you can see how this past week has been somewhat of a roller coaster for me.

The events of the past week got me to thinking. What is the real effect of twenty four hour casting speculation? Is it merely fan boys run amuck or does it have an almost viral impact on the entertainment industry, be it good or bad? If Inception director Chris Nolan is to be believed the whole thing can have a negative impact on the overall process.

Eclipse – Review

Blame the wonderful weather. Blame the fact that I hadn’t seen a movie in over a week. Blame that post-euphoric buzz of one of the greatest Glastonbury Festivals in living memory. Blame something because what I will write over the next few paragraphs needs an instant apology. Namely that the new Twilight film is actually okay.

In fact in the course of this review I will accentuate the positive of almost every aspect of the latest fangs and fancying flick. Not only because I believe it has taken too much of a pasting by overly cynical reactionaries (such as myself) but also because I know I’ll be pissing off more TwiHard haters by liking said movie, than TwiHard lovers by saying I hate it.

If that’s not the antithesis of good critiquing I don’t know what is.
