In the second of our “find people we love and ask them to talk about movies they love” piece its Jeffrey Lewis!
I’ve always heard that the man’s ridiculously approachable and good to fans but wasn’t quite expecting an instant affirmative reply and interview. Cheers Jeff!
Oh yeah, he’s also an awesome song and comic-writer who does a great line in Watchmen analysis. He’s damn funny to boot.

What is your Most Favourite Bestest Film In The Whole Wide World?
Street Trash, the only movie ever made by Jim Muro, is definitely one of my all-time favorites. It is theoretically a horror movie but has so many other elements in it that it is impossible to accurately describe, and that impossible-to-describe quality is a big part of what I enjoy in some other favorite films of mine (Barton Fink, Evil Dead 2, etc). Street Trash has a lot of classic 1980s horror movie stuff, also classic 1980s New York City atmosphere, and there’s so many weird characters and subplots that is almost like a pre-Seinfeld sort of thing, perfect story telling, a post-modern sort of pop-art splatter gross out comedy/cop show/mafia/sleaze combination… BIG PROBLEM – the current DVD release of Street Trash includes a lot of scenes that were deleted from the original theatrical release, and from the original VHS and DVD editions of Street Trash.
I don’t mind getting to see the deleted scenes, but the problem is that you do not have the option to watch the movie in its REAL form, the deleted scenes are not “extras”, they have now been made part of the movie. And they were deleted for a reason – they are all stupid. The movie is perfect without these scenes – with the extra scenes I would NOT consider it an all-time great of quite the same stature. Try to find a copy without the extra scenes included and you WILL be blown away by this movie. Guaranteed.
Favourite Scene From Said Movie?
I don’t want to give anything away. It’s all great. But the guy who plays the doorman at the fancy restaurant is brilliant in every scene he appears in.
Favourite Line From Said Movie?
Probably all too offensive to quote here! Maybe when Whizzie says “You gotta respect your elders!” But this is the kind of movie where the memorable lines are MANY.
First Movie You Remember?
E.T. of course.
Last Film You Saw?
Watched “Fantastic Mr. Fox” on the flight home last night, thought it was quite good.
Worst Film You’ve Ever Seen?
The recent “Public Enemies” movie from this past summer comes to mind as a totally boring pointless stupid waste of time, tho there are no shortage of those…
What Do You Love About Movies?
They are good to watch on airplanes!
